About Alavia

An independent LGBTQIA+ social innovation initiative.

Alavia creates research-informed, psychology-based tools and projects for everyday life. We turn lived experience and evidence into accessible resources, interactive experiences and practical solutions.

Vision

A world in which LGBTQIA+ people can navigate everyday life with greater agency, safety, capability and access to opportunities — without being required to disclose, explain or compromise their identities.

Mission

To identify everyday barriers, co-design useful responses, and develop, test and share accessible tools grounded in research, psychological theory and lived experience.

Why now

People encounter barriers across work, education, wellbeing, social participation and access to information. Many resources are fragmented, hard to apply or unavailable in safe, accessible formats. Alavia exists to translate knowledge into usable supports — while recognising that individual tools cannot replace structural change, rights protection or specialist services.

What Alavia is — and is not

Alavia is

  • A product-oriented social innovation initiative
  • A research-to-product development approach
  • An ethical, participatory design practice
  • A grant-supported portfolio of tangible outputs

Alavia is not

  • A registered NGO, charity or foundation
  • A volunteer or membership association
  • A therapy provider or crisis service
  • A generic DEI training consultancy

Our principles

Research-informed

We use literature, primary user research and implementation evidence — and we separate established findings from hypotheses.

Psychology-based

Each tool documents the psychological mechanism behind it. We avoid unsupported clinical claims.

Impact-driven

We define the user problem, the change we hope for and how we will evaluate it — before we build.

Co-designed, not extractive

Lived-experience input is invited with informed consent and fair recognition.

Privacy by design

We collect the minimum. Identity disclosure, visibility or personal testimony is never a condition of access.

Accessibility as a requirement

Designed for mobile, low bandwidth, assistive technologies and plain language.

Structural awareness

We do not frame systemic discrimination as an individual confidence deficit.

Safety before scale

Nothing launches before threat modelling, safeguarding and secure data handling.

Five focus areas

01

Research & Insights

Understand needs, barriers and context through literature review, participatory inquiry and ethical evaluation.

02

Tools & Technology

Translate insight into practical digital and offline tools with accessible, privacy-aware interfaces.

03

Learning & Growth

Build agency and capabilities through experiential, self-directed and scenario-based learning.

04

Wellbeing & Agency

Support everyday coping, reflection, self-advocacy and help-seeking — without presenting non-clinical tools as treatment.

05

Access & Opportunity

Reduce practical friction in accessing education, work, services and networks.

From theory to tools — with honesty about evidence

Our work draws on established frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, the Minority Stress Model, the Capability Approach and experiential learning. Theoretical relevance does not mean a tool is clinically effective or scientifically validated: every Alavia product carries its own evidence and evaluation record.

Our commitment

We listen before we design. We test before we claim. We protect people before we seek visibility.

No digital tool can remove discrimination on its own — but thoughtful, evidence-informed tools can make meaningful everyday differences when developed with the people they are intended to serve.
